CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Hands on my mouth. My arms. The room was dark, small. Someone was pinning me, keeping me from moving. I wanted to scream, to fight, but my body seemed frozen as someone restricted my movements.

“Scream and you’re dead, orphan.”

Orphan. It had to the Lords or their minions. If I thought that knowledge would help my panic, I was sadly mistaken. Kidnappers would be bad, but at least they weren’t as sadistic and awful as Easton Hill or Hector Contreras.

I needed to get out. Now.

Finding the flesh of the fingers over my mouth, I bit down hard.

A muffled scream filled the air. The hand on my mouth dropped away. I sucked in a breath, ready to belt out a cry for help, but a fist smashed into my stomach before I could let one loose. My breath exploded out as I crumpled inward. Any air I had left me in one fell swoop, and I was left bent over and gasping for air like a tortured duck.

“Shit. This is all too loud. I told you this was a stupid idea.”

The voice was female, not male as I had expected. So minions were doing this to me. I had some hope then. Girls would be smaller, easier to fight. The problem was I could barely suck in a breath, let alone fight several students.

I tried to stand and breathe, but both abilities alluded me. Clawing my way up, I found a metal shelf. I pulled myself into a standing position, careful to block vital organs by curling toward the shelf while I drew a few ragged breaths.

“Let’s just get this over with,” another female voice said. “Goddamn, my hand hurts. Bitch.”

Good. Come at me again, and I’ll bite something else important. I wanted to say it, but I was still focusing on getting air in and out. At least the duck quacking had ceased.

A light clicked on. Someone’s cell phone light blinded me for a moment. I squinted and held up a hand to block it, trying to see who was attacking me. Three shapes. Female. They wore academy uniforms, but I couldn’t make out their faces.

“Leave me alone,” I managed. “I haven’t done anything to you.”

A figure stepped forward. “No, bitch, but I’m about to do something to you.”

I squinted at the face as she stepped closer. What was her name? Monica? Monique? She was popular, one of the groupies. Last I’d known, she was seeing… Lowell.

Ah. Somehow, she’d heard about Lowell and me.

“You got him in trouble. The Lords are punishing him now, and it’s all your fault. You and your skanky, dick-tease ways. Scholarship girls are always trouble. That’s what my father said. I don’t know how you got Lowell to slum around with you, but it ends today.”

I got Lowell in trouble with the Lords again?

I didn’t have time to process further. She reached out, grabbing a handful of my hair. I could sense that she was pulling her arm back to punch me again.

I ducked as she swung.
